ISM for Chemical Reactions

Integrated Safety Management for Chemical Synthesis

The ISM form is intended to help researchers plan their chemical reactions and think through potential safety responses should something go wrong. It requires researchers to read through the safety data sheets (SDS's) of the chemicals involved, to consider potential side reactions, and to define intended volumes, temperature ranges, reaction set-ups, etc.

Most importantly, this form guides the safety discussion that researchers are required to have with their staff contact, outlining what changes to the scope of the project will require a stop of work until the intended new conditions are evaluated and approved.

ISM Form Instructions

This video walks you through how to complete the Inorganic Facility's ISM form at the Molecular Foundry using a metal hexaboride synthesis example. This document is intended to guide the discussion that is required to happen between the researcher and the assigned staff contact overseeing the work. It is intended to help both parties understand the intended chemistry, potential side reactions, expected hazards (and emergency response), and what changes will trigger the researcher to stop and have a follow-up conversation with the assigned staff.

Looking for a blank ISM form or a completed example?

Both are right here:

ISM for Chemical Synthesis_BLANK FORM

This document is to be completed and discussed with your staff contact prior to starting chemistry, especially if you plan to work in the wet labs. Word to the wise - the conversation goes much more quickly if you email this in advance of your scheduled meeting! :)

ISM_Form_Example

This is a completed ISM form that is different than the example presented in the video, but using similar starting materials. It gives you one more sample of how the document should be completed prior to meeting with your staff contact. If you have additional questions, please reach out to any of the staff for help.
